The ruler of Iran during Baha'u'llah's lifetime was Nasiri'd-Din Shah. His reign was stained by many cruel atrocities, including the execution of Baha'u'llah's Herald; the imprisonment of Baha'u'llah; His exiles to Baghdad, Constantinople, Adrianople and 'Akka; and the torture and death of thousands of Baha'is in an attempt to strangle the Faith in the land of its birth. To him Baha'u'llah wrote:
