Christian Messianic Expectations and Baha'u'llah's Claims-- In the nineteenth century, there arose among many Christians the strong conviction that they were living in the final days - 'the end time' - prophesied in the Bible. Christians, including lay-persons, preachers, and biblical scholars of virtually every denomination, in both Europe and America, began to assert that the prophecies of the Scriptures were rapidly reaching their culmination and that Jesus' long-awaited Second Advent was drawing near. There were large numbers of Christians who even thought that the year 1844 would be the year of Christ's return. The expectation was so great and so widespread that historians have called the period immediately following 1844 'the Great Disappointment'. (13:2)
