Obviously, these words are meant to be taken symbolically, not literally. There is scarcely a person who does not believe that the story of Jonah, who was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, has an inward symbolical meaning rather than an outward physical one. That the resurrection of Christ is in like manner to be taken symbolically is shown by His own words. Christ likens His own death, and burial, to that very story of Jonah and the big fish.
