But even in this Congregationalist Eden dissentions arose. Dissenters who had left Europe in search of religious freedom frequently denied it to others in their midst. It took a Roger Williams to remind Puritan elders that "forced worship stinks in God's nostrils." Banished from Massachusetts Bay Colony, he named his Rhode Island settlement "in commemoration of God's Providence," drew up America's first document separating church and state, and founded America's first Baptist church.
