On both sides of the Atlantic the role of the dissenter long remained hard. Take George Fox, founder of the Quakers.. the Quakers worshiped without clergy in plain steeple-less meeting houses. Sitting thoughtfully, one might rise to speak from the heart of mind, then another, then all would listen to the inner voice. In 1681 the Quakers found a New World home in Penn's Woods-- Pennsylvania-- named for their patron William Penn, Fox's most illustrious disciple
