In the New Testament there are four versions recounting the Gospel: the Gospel according to Matthew, the Gospel according to Mark, the Gospel according to Luke and the Gospel according to John. The first three versions provide similar brief accounts of the ministry of Jesus Christ and express essentially the same point of view concerning Jesus' life and work. For this reason they are called the 'synoptic' Gospels. Because Jesus' discourse concerning future events is found in all three of these versions, this particular discourse is frequently referred to as the Synoptic Apocalypse. The Olivet Discourse does not appear in John's version of the Gospel. (19:1)
