APPENDIX IV-- THE KINGDOM OF GOD-- Christians who interpret the Bible literally believe that the Kingdom of God signifies a material paradise wherein everything on earth is transformed, even, for example, carnivorous animals which, it is believed, will turn into herbivores. This view is based on a literal interpretation of the prophecy, 'the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb' (Isaiah 11:6). (191:1) Baha'i teachings support the second view. Some people objected to Baha'u'llah's messianic claims by pointing out that the paradise to be established in fulfilment of prophecy had not occurred. Rejecting the literal interpretation of such verses, Baha'u'llah indicated that the paradise promised in Scripture signifies the closeness to God that can be attained through the acceptance of His Revelation (Epistle 132). True paradise is not a material place where all the circumstances or tests of temporal existence have been removed. Some degrees of difficulty will always exist in this world inasmuch as they are essential for the development of such spiritual qualities as patience, forgiveness, charity and detachment. Paradise, therefore, is achieved through following the teachings of God which enable people to develop spiritual perfections and to live in peace even while many of life's difficulties continue.
