This event, so closely linked to the rejection of Christ, had a major impact on the future of the Jewish nation, even up to our own time. From the destruction of the Temple onwards the Jews would remain a scattered people living under the rule of other nations. In some regions, where major centres of Jewish population developed, such as in Europe, they would suffer severe persecutions. It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that a significant number of Jews began to return to Jerusalem.
