For that same power which was characteristic of Islam, the scholars have no explanation to offer. That an uneducated man should leave a book which has attracted and influenced the most enlightened minds for many centuries and who has "like hardly any other educated his followers to a special type of person", that he should be able to create a religion sparkling with life, a religion which spread all over the world in a few years, influenced millions of people throughout the centuries and gave rise to a culture equal to Western culture-- this is a mysterious phenomenon for scholars. The orientalist Fueck broke with the hitherto prevailing image of Islam: "Finally the inadequate results reached with this method of research led to the conclusion that there must be a fault at the very beginning of this approach... In fact, all narrow-minded attempts to attribute Muhammad's appearance to Christian or Jewish influence have failed." (150:1)
