God is transcendental-- beyond our comprehension and our imaginative power. Therefore all speculation about the reality of God, such as the ideas of the Incarnation and the Trinity in Christian theology, is vain and condemned to failure. Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith, proclaims the absolute transcendence of God: "God, singly and alone, abideth in His Own Place which is Holy above space and time, mention and utterance, sign, description and definition, height and depth" (20:2)

God cannot be conceived, perceived or objectively known. He is beyond our rational understanding. According to Baha'u'llah's teachings, His essence will always be hidden from man. He is the Hidden One for there is no direct way leading to the knowledge of Him: "The way is barred and all seeking rejected." But He is also the "Manifest One", for He reveals Himself to men through His manifestations, as religious history testifies (20:3)
