"In the world today, appeals for peace often are but a prelude to the stepped-up use of force. Calls for disarmament are followed by increased expenditures for ever more horrible weapons. Solemn assurances about human rights are contradicted by growing complacency and apathy concerning the plight of millions of our fellow human beings. Realistic recognition of the immense needs of the greater part of mankind is rarely matched by generous and farsighted action." (U Thant).... (19:3) Nation states, and the political groups which govern them, are not only a negative influence preventing rational solutions to world problems, they positively add to those problems in a most dangerous fashion. Fear and narrow-minded ambition lead governments to see their interests primarily in terms of military, economic and political influence. Nations seem compelled to extend their power as much as possible.
