"The friends must strictly refrain from divorce unless something arises which compels them to separate because of their aversion for each other; in that case, with the knowledge of the Spiritual Assembly, they may decide to separate. They must then be patient and wait one complete year. If during this year harmony is not re-established between them, then their divorce may be realized... The foundation of the Kingdom of God is based upon harmony and love, oneness, relationship and union, not upon differences, especially between husband and wife. If one of these two become the cause of divorce, that one will unquestionably fall into great difficulties, will become the victim of formidable calamities and experience deep remorse." ('Abdul-Baha) (83:2) There is nothing to prevent a Baha'i from remarrying if he wishes.. (83:3) ..marriage has been discussed primarily as a spiritual union, which is appropriate, as the Baha'i view is that this is the real and most lasting aspect of marriage, reflecting the fact that man is essentially a spiritual being. However, Baha'i Writings affirm that the physical side of marriage is also of great importance. Sex is not only the means of procreation, which in itself is one of the main purposes of marriage, but it is one of the most beautiful channels for the expression of the spiritual union which should exist between husband and wife. The pleasure which is found in using this channel to strengthen the bond of love in marriage is one of the great joys of nature and is so appreciated in Baha'i teaching. (83:4) However, sex, as is true of every other physical aspect of nature quickly loses its beauty when it becomes an end in itself, and when it is used outside its proper bounds it can and does become an ugly and destructive force.
