Chapter 51 of  60

They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. (psa 22:18) (51:3) see

Predictions (51:4)

These words appear to be the voice of the writer of the Psalm, in this case, David. I cannot see any predictions coming from these words (51:5)

Fulfillment (51:6)

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them and upon my vesture did they cast lots. (mat 27:35) (51:7) see

Commentary (51:8)

Matthew here has revealed that the words spoken by David were actually spoken as if they were the words of his holy Descendant, Jesus. This sheds light on the bond between the two - a bond that was much more than that of mere blood relationship (51:9)

Although speaking in the voice of his Lord, and predicting with divine accuracy the details of His utter humiliation centuries before it was to occur, his words still offered the seeker after the Christ no help in finding Him. There was no hint of the great meaning of David's words, no signal that would have directed the seeker to Christ (51:10)

Once again, as with all other prophetic references to Christ, the holy meaning of the words of the prophet remain hidden to those who have not accepted Him, while at the same time they are a source of awe and wonder to those who have (51:11)
